Jewellery Engraving
Lettering onto Jewellery
Most items of jewellery can be hand engraved. Initials, Inscriptions, Monograms, Club Logos or even a Portrait can all enhance an item of jewellery as well as making the item more personal. There are two methods used to engrave onto jewellery, Machine and Hand engraving. Machine engraving presses the metal down and is limited to using templates. Hand Engraving on the other hand actually cuts into the metal producing a DEEPER and BRIGHTER cut and is only limited by the engravers own artistic ability.
At Thomas Flack Engravers we only undertake Hand Engraving and have a list of prestigous customers and jewellers throughout the world.
A Hand Engraved article can become something of outstanding beauty depending upon the correct lettering, positioning and the individual engravers own artistry. No two hand engravers work is the same, each hand engraver has their own style.
Lettering
Lettering and all the multitude of styles and forms that they can take, is an art in itself. A single letter of the alphabet can be engraved in such a variety of styles such as floral or arnamental to name but a few. Some extremely intricate lettering designs can leave you amazed at the brilliant artistry and sheer beauty.
However intricate the design of the letter, the person that views the engraving must be able to see exactly what the letter is and though some styles of lettering are artistic, to say the least, it can be difficult to make out what the letter actually is. The basic shape of the letter, whether Script, Roman, Old English or Block should not be lost amongst a web of intricate floral or arnamental engraving and time should be taken in the overall design of letters such as in the design of an entwined monogram.
When begining an engraving, be it a large inscription onto a silver salver , a monogram onto a pair of cufflinks or a single initial onto a signet ring , the engraver will look at the overall shape of the article to be engraved and then decide on the style and positioning of the engraving that will best suit that article. The design is then drawn onto the item of jewellery and scribed in order that the engravers hand may move freely over the item of jewellery. Using hand held gravers the design is then cut into the metal. The reflection of light onto these cuts brings the engraving to life, the art is knowing which cuts to use to best display the design.
At THOMAS FLACK MASTER ENGRAVERS all of these things are taken into consideration and your piece of jewellery is seen as an individual peice of craftsmanship to be further enhanced by our engraving. The NAG Card shows a variety of lettering styles that customers may choose to be engraved onto there piece of jewellery, even facsimile engraving such as a signature.
