The ring is held firmly in a wooden engravers vice. The lettering is first drawn onto the ring giving a rough idea of balance and size. |

A sharp scriber is then used to scratch the lettering that has been drawn onto the ring, these are the guide lines that will be followed when engraving. |

The ring is then cut with the graver, cutting all 'down' strokes first , turning the graver slightly (rolling) cuts a thicker line. |

All the 'up' strokes are cut as above. |

Thin scroll lines are cut. |
