Jewellery Techniques - Engraving a ring by hand

Jewellery Engraving - Stage One

The ring is held firmly in a wooden engravers vice. The lettering is first drawn onto the ring giving a rough idea of balance and size.

Jewellery Engraving - Stage Two

A sharp scriber is then used to scratch the lettering that has been drawn onto the ring, these are the guide lines that will be followed when engraving.

Jewellery Engraving - Stage Three

The ring is then cut with the graver, cutting all 'down' strokes first , turning the graver slightly (rolling) cuts a thicker line.

Jewellery Engraving - Stage Four

All the 'up' strokes are cut as above.

Jewellery Engraving - Stage Five

Thin scroll lines are cut.

Jewellery Engraving - Stage Six

The ring is highly polished and ready for the customer .
